5 Reasons Birth Control Should Be Available Over-the-Counter

This is the world we want to live in, and it’s the one we’re working toward. That’s why we’re part of Free the Pill, a campaign to make the birth control pill available over-the-counter (OTC), meaning you can get it without a prescription. We want to share our top 5 reasons why the pill should be available OTC, and we hope you’ll join us in this movement.

1. It’s safe and effective
   The birth control pill you know and trust would be just as safe if it were available OTC. It meets the FDA’s standards for over-the-counter sale, just like other medications.
2. It saves you time and money
   Getting to the doctor isn’t always easy, and it can be even harder when you’re juggling multiple jobs, school, childcare, or financial difficulties. Birth control shouldn’t be something only accessible to those with privilege. You shouldn’t need a lot of time or money to control your own reproductive health.
3. It gives you more control
   Ready to start birth control? Why should there be so many barriers between you and your first pill? Imagine being able to walk into a pharmacy and pick it up, just like you would with condoms or allergy meds. You’d never have to worry about running out because your prescription expired or waiting for an appointment with your doctor.
4. Healthcare providers support it
   Organizations like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Academy of Family Physicians agree that birth control should be available without a prescription.
5. It’s already available in many countries
   The U.S. is lagging behind. The birth control pill is already available OTC in over 100 countries worldwide.
