Valid Reasons to Skip a Second Date, Even If the First One Was Fine

Nov 7, 2024

Imagine this: you just had a first date. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t spectacular either—just somewhere in between. They were nice, and maybe you could see yourself liking them eventually. When they ask for a second date, it feels easier to say yes. After all, you don’t want to feel guilty about turning them down, or you feel like you should be dating more, or maybe you just can’t come up with a solid excuse not to go out again. But sometimes, even without any major red flags, there are still valid reasons to say no to a second date. Here are a few:

  1. They’ve already planned their wedding (partner TBD)
This one might not be a full-on red flag, but it’s definitely a yellow one. If they’re more focused on getting to the altar than on who’s standing beside them, that should make you think twice.
  2. The conversation was as deep as a puddle
If the most meaningful conversation you had was about the weather or the latest reality TV show, and getting to a deeper connection felt like pulling teeth, ask yourself: Do you really want to sit through another two hours of small talk? If the answer is no, then skipping the second date is probably a good idea.
  3. They’re already talking about your grandkids
It’s one thing to be optimistic about the future, but if they’re already picking out names for your kids by the end of your first coffee date, it can feel like they’re moving way too fast. When things get overwhelming like this, it can take away from the romance.
  4. You found yourself staring at your phone (or wanting to)
We’ve all been there—it’s rude to check your phone during a date, but if you’re more entertained by scrolling through your feed than by talking to your date, that’s a sign. They might have been nice, but if the highlight of the evening was playing Candy Crush while they were in the bathroom, it’s probably not worth another round.
  5. They don’t seem to get your humor
If they didn’t laugh at your witty remarks or didn’t react to that funny story about your last family reunion, what’s the point? A shared sense of humor is key—it makes the good times better and helps you get through the bad times. If they’re not really engaged because they don’t find you fascinating, then a second date probably isn’t necessary.
  6. Your friends aren’t feeling it
Sometimes, your friends know you better than you know yourself. If they met your date or you shared all the details with them, and their collective verdict is a hard pass, it might be worth taking their advice. Your friends want the best for you, and they might spot red flags that you missed.
