Wondering About Your Sexuality? Here Are Some Things to Consider

Sep 7, 2024

Some people go through the process of exploring their sexuality and feel confident about how they identify and what they want. For others, understanding their sexuality can be a lifelong journey. Unfortunately, we live in a world where stepping outside traditional ideas of heteronormativity is often discouraged. For many, exploring and expressing their sexuality can even feel unsafe due to societal pressure or laws. But here at Bedsider, you’re in a safe space. We support you, we care about your well-being, and we believe that investing time in discovering who you truly are is an important and valuable process. If you’re eager to explore your sexuality but aren’t sure where to start, here are some helpful tips:

  1. Start with curiosity
Approaching your journey with curiosity, even when things feel confusing or intimidating, helps you get the most out of it. Curiosity is the key to self-discovery. Begin by asking yourself simple questions like, “What do I fantasize about?” or “Who have I had crushes on?” The answers to these questions can guide you on what to explore next.
  2. Labels are optional
Sexuality and sexual orientation are fluid and exist on a spectrum, which is why it’s helpful to view them as flexible. You don’t have to stick to one label, and you can be wherever you feel comfortable. If learning about different labels helps you better understand yourself, go ahead and explore them. But if labels feel restrictive or unnecessary, feel free to skip them! What matters most is that you embrace who you are, however that looks for you.
  3. Experiment with respect
If you’re ready to explore, trying new things and experimenting with different experiences can be a fun way to discover what you like. This can be done alone or with a partner (or partners). Just remember, communication is key—make sure you’re clear with anyone you’re involved with about what you’re looking for. It’s important not to lead anyone on or create expectations for something you’re not interested in.
  4. Remember that birth control is for everyone
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: LGBTQIA+ people can and do use birth control. One reason is to prevent pregnancy, and that can be important no matter your identity. Whether you or a partner can get pregnant doesn’t depend on how you identify, but rather on what body parts you have and what you’re doing with them. If there’s a chance of pregnancy based on your situation, it’s essential to explore birth control options and find the one that works best for you.
  5. Keep track of your sexual health
Birth control isn’t just for pregnancy—it’s also about protecting your sexual health. While many forms of birth control help prevent pregnancy, only condoms and internal condoms provide both pregnancy and STI protection. Other options, like dental dams, gloves, and PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), protect against STIs but don’t prevent pregnancy. PrEP is a daily pill or bi-monthly injection that lowers the risk of getting HIV. Regular STI testing is also an important part of maintaining your sexual health.

Enjoy the journey, and remember—we’re here for you every step of the way!
